[Redacted-1]: So we're trying to figure out how to "do gender right." At first, we wanted to pretend that gender wasn't an issue and not ask for it at all. But then we realized most people still tend to have strong gender biases when they decide who to fuck. So now we're asking for it, and there are common categories, but you can define someone's gender however you want, or you can just as easily not define it at all.

Medically, race is significant -- people with white skin are more likely to get melanoma than people with black skin, so it needs to be recorded. But if it shows up as significant in politics, power, or how people are treated, then that's really not okay.
